Some people believe that marriage is the ultimate goal of any relationship. However, a lot of people find that living under the same roof once they tie the knot is far from what we see in the movies.
Don’t get us wrong, there’s nothing bad about marrying your soulmate. However, once you do and find yourself living with your better half, you’ll know the intricacies of your personal relationship, each other’s quirks, and other major turn-offs you never observed while living apart.
That’s why the concept of living separately after marrying is gaining popularity nowadays, which sounds odd but even celebrities have vouched for it. Underworld actress Kate Beckinsale is one of those who would want to give this a try if ever she ties the knot again.
The 46-year-old, who was married to director Len Wiseman for more than a decade before calling it quits five years ago, believes that a marriage can work well when couples don’t share the same roof. Apparently, Kate thinks that the exchange of I do’s is relatively easy, but what’s not is residing with the person in a single house.
Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Falchuk have the same set-up
Kate sees this unconventional marriage set-up as empowering because she said it is easy for women to think of the needs of other people first. As such, it is really nice if you were in control, she further said.
The actress was hardly the first to have championed this living arrangement for couples. Iron Man star Gwyneth Paltrow had also revealed that she would not move in yet with husband Brad Falchuk and will wait for a year after their wedding.
Kate calls this a smart move because she said both of the personalities have kids. Gwyneth shares two kids, Apple and Moses, with her ex, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, while the director also has two children, Brody and Isabella, with ex-wife Suzanne.
Kaley Cuoco and Karl Cook aren’t living together
Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco also shared that she will be delaying living together with Karl Cook because it is what works for them. However, that doesn’t mean they don’t frequent each other’s Instagram.
Apparently, sociologists have coined the term living apart together or LAT to describe this arrangement. Different people have various reasons for choosing this – wants to keep the place all to him/herself or privacy, to name a few.
The trend seems to be more common among younger couples
It is also unclear how many couples choose to live apart while still being married but according to research in Canada and Europe, this is more common in younger generations.
