At this point, you’re probably dreaming of a warm, tropical getaway. But that may not be in the cards for you and your family, especially if you’re paying off lingering holiday expenses.

Still you can enjoy the blistering cold of winter  at home on a budget without sitting in front of the television. Here are 7 activities you can enjoy with your family during the winter season that won’t break the bank.

1. Go tubing or sledding.

Tubing is an activity that doesn’t require a skill, so the entire family can get involved. Look up slopes in your area for family rates or buy a cheap tube or sled and go down your own snow covered hill for free.

2. Shop after-holiday sales.

Now that Christmas is over many stores are slashing prices on seasonal items. Head to local stores and sift through sale merchandise to stock up for next year. If you’re lucky you can find markdowns on merchandise up to 75% off.

3. Host a Super Bowl party.

Even if you’re not into football, hosting a Super Bowl party is a good excuse for a gathering during the winter. Invite a few friends, buy some snacks and beverages and you’ve got a party the whole family can enjoy.

4. Play board games.

Bring the family together for game night. Choose board and card games that are age appropriate for the entire family. If you have young members choose games like Sorry, Chutes and Ladders or Uno.

5. Volunteer.

Give back a service to others in need during the winter. Locate a soup kitchen where you can serve or a food bank where you can volunteer. Taking part in charitable service is an activity that’s valuable for the entire family and improves the lives of others.

6. Bake.

Who doesn’t love baking in warm weather? Include little ones in the baking process and you’ve got a fun activity to do in the warmth of your home. Try unique recipes like blueberry scones or gingerbread cupcakes. If you need inspiration, there’s no place better to look than Pinterest.

7. Ice-skate.

Although it requires a little more skill, ice-skating is a thrilling outdoors activity that you can do during the winter to pass the time. Even if you’re not coordinated or an expert skater it’s worth a shot on the ice. Some ice rinks offer affordable lessons and training tools for adults and younger kids.
