Legions of fans of hottie Shawn Mendes were heartbroken when rumors that their idol and a certain Camila Cabello were dating, which was heavily evidenced by many pictured instances that they were locking lips. But who is she and what do we need to know about her?
First of all, Camila is more than just a woman who swept Shawn’s heart. Even before their highly celebrated collaboration Señorita, she was already an established singer that used to be a part of Fifth Harmony, a pop girl group that emerged from talent search X Factor.
As with any group, there would be one that easily attracts attention – that’s her. She left the group, but unlike others who tried going solo only to find out that they couldn’t make it, Camila’s career took off for the better.
Childhood
The petite singer’s parents, a Mexican father and a Cuban mother, welcomed Camila in Havana, Cuba, which explains her hit and LSS-inducing song that snatched throngs of awards. Until seven, she was traveling back and forth between the two places.
She moved to Miami and attended Miami Palmetto High School, but Camila knew that she wanted to pursue music, so by 9th grade, she dropped out. As she turned 15, she requested to be driven to Greensboro, North Carolina, where X Factor was holding auditions.
Camila was told she wasn’t guaranteed an opportunity to audition because she was just an alternate, but Simon Cowell, who created the show, convinced her to do it anyway. After being cut off the earlier part of the competition, she thought it was over for her.
Later on, the promising star was asked to return as part of a group with four other girls, which would become the Fifth Harmony. While the quintet finished third, they signed with Epic Records and Simon’s Syco Music.
The group’s earliest and most remarkable works were Worth It and Work from Home. By 2015, Camila began releasing her songs with other artists like Bad Things (ft. Machine Gun Kelly) and I Know What You Did Last Summer (ft. Shawn).
A rather expected announcement came in December 2016, saying Camila has officially left Fifth Harmony, but in a shocking twist of events, she claimed that she and her management had no idea that this was happening, which only meant she was booted out of the group.
Well, there’s no use in crying over spilled milk, especially for Camila, whose career only flourished when she left the group. By 20, she has scored many awards, thanks to her hit Havana, which was heavily inspired by her life in the Cuban city.
